Announced in October 2024, the project will construct, own, and operate a water storage and delivery system capable of moving and banking up to 2.5 million acre-feet of water-enough to supply millions of people over the coming decades. The Mojave Groundwater Bank is located at the base of a 2,000-square-mile watershed in California’s Mojave Desert, where a naturally replenished aquifer holds an estimated 30-50 million acre-feet of groundwater-more than what’s currently stored in both Lake Mead and Lake Powell combined.

“This isn’t just a water project-it’s a blueprint for climate adaptation and social equity,” said Susan Kennedy, CEO of Cadiz. “For too long, infrastructure investments have bypassed the communities most vulnerable to water insecurity. The Mojave Groundwater Bank is the largest water infrastructure project in the Southwest in decades and the first large-scale project of its kind led in partnership with Tribal Nations off tribal lands. The Lytton Rancheria Tribe of Northern California was the first to commit investment, pledging up to $50 million toward the project. Additional Tribal Nation collaborations are in progress, creating a unique ownership model that helps ensure long-term access and equity for historically excluded communities.

A critical component of the project is its use of 180 miles of repurposed steel pipeline from the decommissioned Keystone XL oil project-an innovative move that reduces cost, timeline, and environmental disruption. Instead of building new infrastructure, Cadiz is cleaning and reinforcing existing fossil fuel pipelines to transport water from the Mojave Desert to communities across California’s Inland Empire and Arizona.

“Water scarcity isn’t just about supply-it’s about broken infrastructure,” Kennedy said. “The same regions that lack access to safe, affordable water are the ones that were pushed out of the system generations ago. This project is about righting that historic wrong while future-proofing our water grid.”

In total, the Mojave Groundwater Bank will create 350 miles of pipeline connectivity, 2.5 million acre-feet of supply and storage capacity, and deliver water to some of the most climate-impacted areas in the Southwest. It is also permitted to store up to 1 million acre-feet of imported supplies, providing critical relief for the overstressed Colorado River and Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta systems.

The aquifer beneath Cadiz Ranch replenishes from rainfall in the High Desert and has the capacity to sustainably deliver 50,000 acre-feet of water per year for at least 50 years-enough to serve more than 400,000 people annually. With extreme climate events like atmospheric rivers, floods, and wildfires becoming the new normal, projects like this are essential to ensuring water security for generations to come.

The fire crisis in the Amazon, which is rapidly advancing, is affecting one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Indigenous, riverside, and farming communities face devastation not only of their lands but also of their ways of life. Amid the neglect of governmental institutions, thousands of NGOs remain silent in the face of the local populations’ plea for help. In this context, representatives from the Mayrowi Pontal Kanindé and Matrinxã villages in Mato Grosso called on the Dakila Pesquisas Institute for emergency support. Riverside communities, farmers, and other forest occupants joined them.

The organization, led by Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira and with archaeologist Fernanda Lima as research director, immediately responded to the call for help. Urandir and his team quickly mobilized, conducting helicopter and drone overflights to monitor the fire outbreaks. The scene was desolate: dead animals, burned homes, and a ruined forest. More than that, Dakila’s monitoring revealed that most of these fires were started criminally, indicating a coordinated effort to destroy the biome and expel communities from their lands.

Technology in Service of the Amazon 

By conducting helicopter and drone overflights, Dakila Pesquisas mapped the most devastated areas and identified the criminal origins of the fires. During these operations, it became clear that the methods used by the criminals are sophisticated: clandestine boats travel along the rivers, creating trails in the forest and applying chemicals to dry out the foliage. Days later, once the leaves are dry, controlled explosions start the fires.

The criminals also use clandestine planes to drop chemical compounds over the forest, making the vegetation even more susceptible to fire. “The mapping we conducted showed that these fires are not random but part of a coordinated effort to expel local communities from their lands,” revealed Urandir Fernandes.

 The consequences of this devastation are clear: destroyed huts, dead animals, and the food supply of the communities compromised. The Dakila team witnessed firsthand that the severity of the situation requires a quick and strategic response to protect the populations and the biome.

Humanitarian Aid and Training 

In addition to directly fighting the fires, Dakila Pesquisas provided humanitarian aid to the affected communities. Respirators, nebulizers, medicines, and bandages were distributed to meet the residents’ urgent health needs. The Dakila team transported families, including newborns, to safe areas, ensuring everyone’s health and safety. 

A key part of the organization’s response was training the communities to face future threats. In partnership with local fire brigades, Dakila trained indigenous, riverside, and farming leaders to form their own fire-fighting brigades. Various fire-fighting kits were donated to ensure these communities are better prepared to resist new tragedies. “Our mission goes beyond putting out fires,” explained Urandir. “We are empowering these people to defend themselves in the future and preserve their lands.”

Dakila Pesquisas also highlighted the relationship between the fires and international corporate interests. Mining companies and other large corporations see the Amazon as a resource to be exploited. According to the organization, these companies not only destroy the biome but also threaten the sovereignty of local populations. “We are fighting not only for the preservation of the forest but for the survival of the communities that depend on it,” said Urandir Fernandes.

The fires are part of a strategy to blame indigenous peoples and local farmers for the destruction while international interests benefit from the exploitation of natural resources like minerals and timber.

Hope in Resistance 

Amid the destruction, Dakila Pesquisas has become a symbol of hope and resistance for the Amazon communities. By providing technical and humanitarian support and training the populations to form their own fire-fighting brigades, the organization has shown that it is possible to confront devastation and protect both the environment and the people who depend on it.

For Dakila, the fight for the preservation of the Amazon is a fight for the survival of traditional cultures and ways of life. The outcry for help from these communities continues, but the organization’s actions reinforce the hope for a future where the forest and its inhabitants can coexist in harmony.

The public perception of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) changed forever after 1947. On June 24, while piloting his plane, Kenneth Arnold observed nine bright objects moving rapidly across the sky over Mount Rainier in Washington. From then on, countless UFO reports emerged worldwide, from the Roswell incident (August 1947), in which an extraterrestrial spacecraft supposedly crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, to the Phoenix Lights (March 1997), which generated a global obsession.

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) report on UFO sightings is published periodically, but it does not follow a fixed annual schedule. The FAB began documenting and officially releasing reports on unidentified aerial phenomena in 1954. The records were kept confidential for many years, but since the 2010s, some of these documents have been made available to the public through the National Archives, in accordance with the Access to Information Law.

Although the FAB does not have a regular schedule for releasing this material, new documents are typically released in batches, covering varying periods depending on the testimonies received and analyzed. Each new batch may bring to light information about sightings in different years, with the most recent documents often being the most eagerly awaited by researchers and the interested public.

The most recent report revealed that, just in 2023, pilots reported seeing 80 unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in Brazilian airspace. Whenever this compilation is released, it reignites the debate about the existence of extraterrestrial life and the possibility of contact with beings from other planets.

While the news often causes surprise and unease among the general population, researchers from the Dakila Pesquisas Association have been cataloging similar evidence for over 20 years. They have long demonstrated that the sightings are a concrete manifestation of phenomena that defy conventional explanations and indicate the need for traditional science to adopt a more comprehensive approach to investigating the subject.

The sightings reported by pilots involve objects of various shapes and behaviors, from lights moving at high speeds to metallic structures that challenge known laws of physics. In some cases, pilots described objects that followed their aircraft for long periods, performing maneuvers impossible for any known human technology.

The reports were recorded by commercial and military pilots, many of whom have decades of experience in the air. The FAB, which maintains a rigorous protocol for investigating such occurrences, has compiled and analyzed the reports in search of patterns. The report, although technical, admits that the descriptions provided by the pilots do not match any known aircraft or meteorological phenomenon.

Dakila Pesquisas, which has cutting-edge laboratories in Brazil and abroad, recognizes that the sightings are just the tip of the iceberg. According to the association, the actual number of sightings is much higher, but many cases are not reported due to fear of discredit or the stigma associated with the subject.

The FAB report data reinforces the importance of independent research, and what is at stake here is more than mere curiosity. We are facing phenomena that could alter our understanding of the universe and humanity’s place in it.

Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira, researcher, scientist, historian and president of the Dakila Pesquisas Institute, talks about the subject: “In the United States, the issue of UFOs gained prominence after the government released reports confirming the existence of unexplained aerial phenomena, drawing the attention of politicians and military personnel. In Brazil, however, the topic is still treated with some reservation, although the increasing number of sightings makes a more open and transparent debate inevitable”.

Urandir and the Dakila researchers argue that a partnership between government institutions and independent research centers is necessary to investigate these phenomena with the seriousness they deserve. “We are not talking about mere conspiracy theories. There is data and concrete evidence that needs to be studied,” Urandir stresses.

With the growing public interest and pressure for answers, Brazil may be on the brink of a new era in UFO investigation. The Dakila Pesquisas Association plans to expand its efforts by investing in cutting-edge technologies and collaborating with scientists from various disciplines to better understand the phenomena that challenge traditional logic.

For many, the FAB report is a sign that there is much more to be discovered. “We are only scratching the surface,” concludes Oliveira. “What is out there, in the sky, is an invitation to expand our boundaries of knowledge.”

Whether UFO sightings represent the beginning of a new phase in human history remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that the search for answers is far from over.
